- Subject: code...
-
- the code is an international language. if you want international bands,
- learn the lingua franca. in the time it took to sift through, post,
- read, reply, etc, i'm sure a few of us could have learned the code
- instead of staring into these stupid screens... the code is easier to
- copy at long distances than voice. it is more reliable than non-cw
- digital modes. it is internationally agreed upon by the iaru, warc, and
- the communications arms of most foreign govt's, so don't hold your breath
- for the fcc to come to your rescue. and it is somewhat of a tribal
- initiation, too: there is a wonderful society in cw; it is a good thing
- to know. it is cool. it is easy. and thankfully, it is based on
- english, which makes it easier for us. and when the bands are dead at
- night, or early before propogation becomes strong, cw is often the only
- mode going... just listen to the bands. and look at the bandwidth: cw is
- the most spectrum efficient 2-way mode: with most radios and their 250 hz
- (and less) filters, and the new dsp filters with their 25 hz bandwidth,
- many amateurs can squeeze into a very small space... on field day, or in a
- major contest, we can work several conversations into less than a khz,
- while voice and fsk take up more than a khz for only one conversation.
- so, before saying that "cw is history," or trying to fight the well
- established track record cw has with other bitter slogans, just remember
- that sometimes the most elegant "solution" is the simplest. in this age
- which is oriented towards instant gratification, manifested in memorizing
- question pools, buying complete stations from a retail source, and
- operatorless stations, it is somewhat of a relief that there is still one
- requirement which requires either a "knack" or a little elbow grease to
- gain the privilege. now, these aren't "real" answers which contain some
- self-actuating, metaphysical, cartesian "truth," which i am sure many of
- you are looking for, but they are good social reasons, grounded in a
- respect for good operators and my love of the art of radio.
- no caps, because we don't need 'em in cw,

- Sorry you took it as a personal attack Dana...I'm not attacking anyone.
- Just poking fun at the idea. I have fun here and I sure wish that people

-
- I think the whole debate is silly anyway but I won't deprive anyone of

- ravings. And every now and then I poke my $.02 in a bit...not to attack
- anyone personally [I don't know anyone well enough to sink their
- battleship to begin with on the net]. Okay? Okay by me.

-
- Gee, thanks for the philosophy, but it might be in vain; I didn't
- regard your comment as a personal attack. Your comment was perfectly
- fair; it seems that few people will debate things, anything, in
- any forum for very long before the discussion becomes personal and
- strays from the topic.
-
- I simply don't believe we have to be "violent". That was my point.
- I guess I'm such a dour and unhappy, serious person that it came
- across as some kind of serious defensive overture. :-)
-
- >I think the whole debate is silly anyway but I won't deprive anyone of
- >their right to argue their point. I enjoy reading the rantings and

-
- Oh, I guess so. If you like rantings and ravings, there are newsgroups
- that exist soley for people to rant and rave and flame like animals.
- Alt.flame is pretty cool, err, serious people don't say cool, alt.flame
- is an appropriate venue for complaing about welfare mentality, fall
- of society, rude digital oeprators, and painful ingrown toe nails.
-
- We really ought to create an alt.radio.amateur.flame, where we all
- could flame each other with wild abandon. I'd kick some serious
- ass there, oops, dour people don't say kick ass, I'd forcefully
- argue my beliefs in a fundamentally compelling manner. The two
- Jeffs could spank each other's monkeys, uh, unhappy people don't
- say spank the monkey, the two jeffs could mutually pleasure each
- other there.
-
- The point is, if r.r.a.p. is to be a decent forum for useful
- discussion, we need to be reasonable. Off-topic flame wars,
- personal attacks, they dilute the point of this newsgroup.

- I practiced using a great shareware program called Morse Academy. It
- goes through the different letters, etc. with you, and then it can do
- drills and quizzes by making the various sounds and then you would have
- to type the proper character. And it even has some sample QSO's that it
- can play at various speeds for you to see if you can copy. Great program
- if you can find it.

- I am well aware of the existance of alt.test, however, I was having problems
- posting to this newsgroup. After fixing the problem, I needed to test my
- system to see if I could post to this newsgroup (NOT a CW Net).

- Sorry about the double posting ... my fingers slipped.

- Well, I think the only way it's legal is if it's an emergency. I think
- the best way to determine if it's an emergency is this:
-
- Pretend you will be fined and/or have your licence revoked if you take
- action "X". Would you still take action "X" if you knew this would
- happen? If not, maybe it's not a "real" emergency.
-
- ( It's just a rule of thumb, but I think it's a good one. )
